Daily Recap: July 21, 2026

Tech and semis drove a strong cap-weighted advance while breadth and credit stayed more measured.

TLDR

Tuesday’s session was decisively positive at the index level, led by technology and semiconductors rather than broad participation. SOXX surged 5.56% and QQQM gained 1.86%, while SPY rose 0.83%, IWM added 1.45%, and RSP lagged at 0.16%, underscoring a market lifted by leadership concentration more than uniform strength.

Across assets, the message was constructive but not unqualified. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 3 bps to 4.63% while high-yield and investment-grade spreads were unchanged, the VIX remained in the mid-to-high teens, and the dollar stayed firm near the upper end of its recent range.

Equities

The index lineup made the day’s character clear. SOXX outperformed sharply with a 5.56% gain, QQQM rose 1.86%, and SPY added 0.83%, while IWM gained 1.45% and RSP trailed badly at 0.16%. That is a bullish tape, but it is not the profile of a fully synchronized advance. The strongest impulse came from higher-beta growth and semiconductor exposure, while equal weight barely moved.

Sector performance reinforced that concentration. Information technology led by a wide margin with a 2.9% gain, followed by energy at 1.0% and health care at 0.6%. Industrials rose 0.3%, consumer discretionary added 0.2%, and materials and financials each gained 0.1%, while utilities were flat, real estate slipped 0.1%, communication services fell 0.7%, and consumer staples declined 0.9%. With SPY up 0.83%, the spread between technology leadership and the lagging defensive groups shows exactly where the buying was focused.

Breadth improved on the day, but the broader one-month pattern remains choppy. The advance-decline line bounced sharply from a recent dip below zero and finished back in positive territory, with a solid positive daily bar on July 21. Even so, the past month still shows repeated swings between strong and weak participation rather than a steady broadening trend, which tempers the strength of the headline index move.

Single-name dispersion remained extreme at the edges. Smart Logistics Global surged 92.48% and Utz Brands advanced 88.72%, while Zhengye Biotechnology dropped 64.42% and Columbia Financial fell 54.78%. That kind of spread between the day’s biggest winners and losers is a reminder that price discovery remains aggressive beneath the index surface.

Options

Volatility stayed contained despite the sharp upside move in semiconductors and growth. The VIX finished in the high teens, well below the spikes above 24 and near 30 seen earlier in the year, and broadly in line with the calmer regime that has prevailed since the spring peak. That is consistent with a market advancing through leadership rather than repricing macro risk.

Rates & Spreads

Rates firmed, but credit did not deteriorate. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 3 bps to 4.63%, while high-yield OAS was unchanged at 2.69% and investment-grade OAS held at 0.78%. Higher yields with flat spreads reads as a cleaner growth signal than the recent combination of lower yields and wider credit.

In context, the 10-year yield remains near the upper end of its one-year range after a steady grind higher through the spring and early summer. Tuesday’s move extends that firmer rates regime rather than altering it.

Macro

The dollar continues to point to firm financial conditions. Over the last three months, DXY climbed from the high 97s to above 101 before easing and then stabilizing near recent highs into July 21. A stronger dollar alongside higher yields and concentrated equity leadership is still a backdrop that favors selectivity over indiscriminate risk-taking.
